My 10 Week No Heat Challenge:
Five weeks ago I decided to banish heat from my hair regimen in the hopes of maximizing my growth retention.  Determined to do this for at least 10 weeks successfully, I immediately started brainstorming on how I could reconfigure my hair regimen to meet the needs of my new hair goal: Soft, Smooth and Manageable Air Dried Hair.  And because this challenge was meant to be a short term plan, I knew I wanted to find what I needed in my current stash of hair products—I don’t need to be experimenting with any new hair products.

Click Here and/or watch the video above for details on what I’ve been doing with my hair for the past 4 weeks.

Q:Are you relaxed or texlaxed?

lifeiscritical

That’s a good question.   I relax with the Affirm Fiberguard System, which is notorious for it’s inability to get the hair bone straight (which is exactly why I like this relaxer so much).  But here are the reasons why I consider my hair relaxed:

  1. People who telax say that they leave the relaxer in for half/less than the recommended time, but my relaxer application time is about 20-22 minutes (which is longer than recommended time); And
  2. My hair isn’t bone straight, but I don’t consider it texlaxed either because it has no curl pattern at all.

Q:Hi ! I have two questions : What do you use to wash your hair and what is your hair washing routine ? 2.) Can you name a good water based spray to spray my hair braids with that will also help my natural hair to grow ?

Anonymous

Hi,
My hair regimen has been (and will probably continue to be) very fluid.  To give you some examples of what I’ve done in the past I’ve linked to posts where I describe my wash day routines, hair products that I used and wash day results for the first 5 months of 2012:

January 2012
February 2012
March 2012
April 2012
May 2012

As for braid sprays: I don’t have one to recommend to you.  But Traycee from KISS just uploaded a video about braids.  She will be in a better position to answer your questions about maintaining/growing your hair while wearing braids as a protective style.  Watch her recent video on the subject.

Happy Hair Growing,
Kim :)

Q:Could you still use the Deep Conditioners with Gentle/Moisture Boosting Proteins even if your hair is quite healthy ?

Anonymous

Absolutely.  Deep Conditioners help you to maintain your hair’s protein/moisture balance between washes.  Deep Conditioners with Moisture Boosting Proteins are my conditioner of choice.

Happy Hair Growing,
Kim :)

Q:I've read the articles and watched your video's but I'm still not quite sure on which protien treatment I should use. My hair doesn't break that much, only around the edges due to tight braids and I relax my hair every 5 months. I'm thinking the organic root stimulator hair mayonnaise but I'm not quite sure...

Anonymous

The only way to know for sure which hair product to choose is to try it out and see.  Everyone’s hair is different and can react differently to the same hair products (based on several variable factors).

You said that your hair doesn’t break that much so you may or may not even need a protein treatment for your hair.  If you’re experiencing breakage there are several things that could be causing it:

  1. Being rough with how you handle your hair (detangling/styling).
  2. Over-manipulation/excessive styling.
  3. Protein/Moisture imbalance decreases your hair’s elasticity making it brittle. (Too much protein or not enough moisture.)
  4. Excessive Heat Styling dries out the hair strands.
  5. Chemical Straightening/Relaxers dries out the hair. (Also, where you overlap [re-relax previously relaxed hair] it over-processes and weakens the hair making it even more susceptible to breakage.)
  6. Coloring/Bleaching dries out the hair.
  7. Other: Stress, Poor Diet, Vitamin Deficiencies.

Source: Hair Breakage

I don’t know how much breakage you are experiencing but everyone’s hair experiences some breakage.  So if you feel your hair is generally healthy and the breakage that you are experiencing is minor, you may even decide that can live with the breakage (and continue to maintain your hair under your current hair regimen).

Good luck to you on your hair journey and Happy Hair Growing!
Kim :)

Q:Does it matter if you wash and deep condition at the same time ? And how long should you do a protien treatment before you do weaves or braids ?

Anonymous

On my hair wash days: I shampoo my hair (2-3 separate lathers), after rinsing my hair I towel dry and then proceed to deep condition: here are the steps to performing a deep conditioning treatment at home.

I don’t have personal experience with weaves and braids while on a hair journey, but if you wanted to do a protein treatment the last wash day before your install, that wouldn’t be a bad idea.  And remember, if it’s a strong protein treatment, then be sure to follow it up with a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment. More on:

Adding Strength.
Adding Moisture.

Q:Urm would you mind clearing things up for me, I'm a bit confused - nothing major. In which order are you meant to do the following things : Deep Condition and Wash, Protein Treatment and Hot Oil Treatment ?

Anonymous

I prefer:

  1. Hot Oil Treatment
  2. Wash
  3. Protein Treatment
  4. Deep Condition.

Q:Oh my gosh that is so sweet ! Thank you so much for the video it was so helpful. One more thing, does it really matter what combination of oils you use ? If not would this be a good combination : Olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil and peppermint oil ? Also how long do YOU leave your hair to sit after your hot oil treatment ?

Anonymous

No problem, I figured it would be easier to show you.  I’m glad you found it helpful.  Yes, you can use one oil or a mix of several oils.  The combination that you listed sounds good to me, they all promote healthy hair and scalp in their own special way.  When I do a hot oil treatment, I let the oils sit on my hair and scalp for 30 minutes before rinsing.

Happy Hair Growing,
Kim :)

Q:What exactly is a hot oil treatment ? How do you do one ?

Anonymous

I made this just for you. :)

Watch this tutorial and Treat yourself to a Hot Oil Treatment At Home. Hot Oil Treatments (HOT) promote hair growth, condition the scalp, combats dry scalp, dandruff, breakage & dry hair, adds shine, and promotes softer hair. You can use a variety of different oils for your Hot Oil Treatment but I listed the most popular ones in the video.

Suggested Frequency: Weekly to Monthly to Once in a While.

Happy Hair Growing!
Kim :)
